When Sarah and Margaret decided to use Sonny as a pawn there main target was me. What was important for them was that I ever got to see Sonny. As a consequence of that came many other consequences,
Parental Alienation is like a virus that spreads, it gets everywhere and has a day to day impact on both the child and the alienated families. The really tragic side of parental alienation is the child doesn't even know they've been subjected to alienation as they've been groomed to think their Dad is a bad person who doesn't care about them. For them being exposed to parental alienation is normal, they don't even know it's happened.
When Sonny was a young lad he was obsessed with Manchester City - my team. After I took him to his first game he slowly began to immerse himself into everything about the team. It was constant! He talked about them all the time and had so many questions about the players I just couldn't answer!
I always remember when I took him on holiday to Tunisa. When I got up in the morning I had a look in at Sonny and he was asleep. As we were about to head out for breakfast I went and sat on his bed to wake him. Slowly he started to come round and after a big stretch, and without saying anything else, he looked at him and said - "Do you think Jolean Lescott has any brother or sisters"! It still cracks me up to this day, it was City, City, City!
We went to many games to watch the team, home and away and also to Wembley for the FA Cup final and he always had the latest football kits, home and away.
I remember once when we were on Market Street in the City Centre and Yaya Toure was in the club shop. I said to Sonny come on I'll you take to see him. Sonny was a bit shy, he didn't want to go in, even though Yaya was one of his heroes. I sat outside with him for a few minutes trying to convince him but he didn't want to go. I remember saying to him sometimes things might seem a little worrying but by being a little bit brave you can do things that will make you really happy - in this case it was to overcome his shyness and meet one of his heroes. It wasn't to be, he didn't want to go and I understood - I was the same at this age.
I did actually go back in that shop at a later date and to my amazement the then Manchester City Manager was in the store - Roberto Mancini. I immediately bought Sonny the latest City training top and went straight to Roberto to ask him to sign it for Sonny, to which he did with a little message for him. Sonny was over the moon!
On Saturday the 10th of June 2023 Manchester City did the unthinkable - They completed the Treble. Premier League Winners, FA Cup Winners and Champions League Winners. It's only ever been done once before. A phenomenal achievement by a phenomenal team, One of the greatest days of my life was when Sergio Aguero smashed home the winning goal to secure the Premier League in 2012 because I witnessed it with Sonny. We were both screaming and shouting and jumping up and down together, an incredible day.
On Saturday when City lifted the Champions League Trophy for the first time in their history it was something I never thought I'd see, a staggeringly momentous achievement to crown the treble. It was somewhat sad though because my little mate wasn't with him - Sonny. He wasn't with me to celebrate a once in a lifetime moment. A moment in time that all Dad's and Son's should have been able to witness together. It was taken from us. It was taken from me and it was taken from Sonny. And it was taken from Sonny by people who were supposed to have acted in the interest of Sonny.
This is the virus of parental alienation. Yes Sarah and Margaret wanted to hurt me and maybe even hurt Sonny's Grandparents but they didn't just steal our time away from Sonny they stole away everlasting memories that we should have all had together. Sonny was born in 2004 and to this day they are still stealing memories from us all.
I went to the parade last night to watch the players come home with all the trophies - I stood with the thousands and thousands of fans watching the players and I thought of Sonny. For a second I imagined he was with me and we were together and I whispered to him - "We did it Sonny, we did it"
I love you Sonny and I miss you more than you could ever imagine x
